Godfrey Chitalu’s Feats in 1972 Cast Doubt Over Lionel Messi’s Goal Record

Godfrey Chitalu’s Feats in 1972 Cast uncertainty Over Lionel Messi’s Goal evidence by Marcus Kwesi O'Mard on Tue, Dec 11, 2012 at 3:34PM Comments () inShare Godfrey Chitalu Lionel Messi has bathed in adoration since he bankrupt Gerd Muller’s record for the majority goals in a calendar year, but the record might not have belonged to Muller in the first place. Zambia’s Godfrey Chitalu reportedly scored 107 goals in 1972. FIFA never formally documented his goal tally, but the Zambian Football Association is submitting evidence to world soccer’s governing body so that it can praise Chitalu with the record, according to NewsDay Zimbabwe. “We have this record, which has been recorded in Zambian football, but unluckily it has not been recorded in world football,” a Zambia FA spokesperson said. “Even as the world has been looking at Lionel Messi’s record, breaking Gerd Muller’s, the discuss and discussion back here has been why Godfrey’s goals are not being recognized. What we are doing is, we have commissioned an self-governing team locally to go back into the archives and record minute-by-minute every of those goals. The team that we have put together is going to calculate all of those goals, recording which ever game or competition they were scored in. “We will then send that to CAF [Confederation of African Football] and FIFA so that we can show that, while Messi’s record is there, while Muller’s record is there, the actual record holder in terms of goals per calendar year is actually an African. It’s actually Godfrey Chitalu.” Chitalu, a five-time Zambian Footballer of the Year prize winner, is considered his country’s greatest-ever player. He hit his 1972 goal haul while playing professional soccer for Zambian club Kabwe Warriors FC. The club competed in at least four competition that year — the Zambian Premier League, the Zambian Cup, the Zambian Challenge Cup and the African Cup of Champions Clubs. He also played for Zambia’s national team that year. paradoxically, that was the same year Muller scored 85 goals for Bayern Munich and Germany. It is unidentified how many games Chitalu played that yeay, as The Zambian FA is currently in the verification process, but he was photographed (via Facebook/Godfrey Chitalu) holding a ball which celebrates his achievement. Godfrey 'UCAR' Chitalu Messi scored twice on Sunday, giving him a total 86 goals for club and country in 2012. The FC Barcelona superstar passed Muller’s 40-year-old blot, and he has three more games to add coldness between himself and the German great. There’s no way the Argentine will score 21 goals to catch Chitalu (will he?), so it is up to the Zambia FA and FIFA to make a decision which player truly holds the record for most goals scored in a calendar year. Have a question for Marcus Kwesi O’Mard?.

Barca plan new Messi deal.

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has exposed the club are preparing a new deal to keep Lionel Messi at Camp Nou.
Lionel still has four years to run on his present deal, but Barca are ready to reward the Argentine ace with a new better contract.

Rosell feels the Catalan giants have a responsibility to look after Messi's interests, although he admits talks have yet to be scheduled
"It finishes in 2016, but it would be irresponsible to not improve his contract," Rosell told Catalunya Radio.
"You have to believe about such things. Right now there is nothing listed, but this is a machine that is constantly in motion and things can change at any moment."
Rosell other: "The coaching staff think about next Sunday, we look further down the line and take the more distant future into consideration.
"Work has to start now on the contract that will take effect from 2016."
Rosell also refused to get involved in the debate surrounding Real Madrid's problems amid reports of dressing room unrest at the Bernabeu.
"The day you become preoccupied by other teams' matters is the day you start to lose," continued Rosell. "We need to remain a close group and work as such."

Arsenal boss Wenger: Barcelona's Messi deserves Ballon d'Or

Arsenal boss  wenger says Barcelona  star Lionel Messi  deserves the Ballon d'Or.
Wenger believes that the Argentina international should be crowned once  again.
“It’s very hard. For the class, Messi should win it,” the Arsenal manager said. “He’s scored 76 goals in one year. It looks just disgraceful to me. Therefore it would be one thing to reward something exceptional.
“Ronaldo has always been there and he deserves it as well. He won the Spanish championship. Iniesta won the European Championship with the national team and therefore, you could reward him.
“I’m not a big fan of these things. If you judge purely on class, you judge Messi. If you want the achievement of the year, you would choose Ronaldo and maybe Iniesta in second. That’s how I see it.”

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta shortlisted for Ballon d'Or

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta were on Thursday shortlisted for this year's Ballon d'Or, football's world major body FIFA and sponsors France Football magazine said.

Barcelona forward Messi, 25, has by now won the title three times and the Argentine is again favourite to win the award, which will be presented in Zurich on January 7 after votes from the media, nationalized team captains and coaches.

If he wins, he would become the first player to win the award four times, having already joined French legend and current UEFA president Michel Platini as the only players to win three straight titles.

Dutch stars Johan Cruyff and Marco Van Basten have also won three accolade.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter unveiled the shortlist at a news conference in Sao Paulo.

"I won't say it's on a level with the Oscars - but it's not far away," joked Blatter as the three names were exposed from a shortlist of 23.

He also revealed that Spain's Vicente Del Bosque - who ensured the Spanish became the first international side to land three straight tournament by winning Euro 2012 - Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola were on the shortlist for the title of best coach.

In common circumstances, Ronaldo's haul of 46 goals in La Liga last season -- only surpassed by Messi's astonishing 50 -- would likely have placed him in pole position, but Messi's record-breaking feats have left the Portuguese talisman in his shadow.

"They pushed each other to the limit of talent," said Francois Moriniere, CEO of France Football.

Blatter said it was common that generally players plying their trade in Europe would gain the limelight, though Neymar of Brazil's Santos had been on a first shortlist.

Plenty of South Americans have won the award - but overwhelmingly have been playing in Europe, usually in Spain.

"Europe is the benchmark of football," said Blatter.

"As a result it's difficult for an important person not playing in Europe to be on the list."

Messi's brace in Barca's 4-0 win at Levante on Sunday lifted him onto 82 goals for the season, just three short of Gerd Mueller's all-time chart record of 85 set in 1972.

Ahead of the announcement of the shortlist, Barca teammate Gerard Pique - one of eight Spaniards initially shortlisted - said Ronaldo was a excellent player but Messi "is an alien" and would thus get his vote.

At the same time as Messi suffered heartache in being denied in La Liga by Real Madrid and in the Champions League semi-finals by Chelsea, Ronaldo, title winner with Real, guided Portugal to the semi-finals of Euro 2012 before they lost on penalties to Iniesta's Spain.

Iniesta was voted the best player at Euro 2012 and edges out Xavi, who has three times finished the final poll in third spot.

Football greats say Messi deserves Ballon D'Or ahead of rival Ronaldo .

Asked to give their choice, former England captain Keegan, who won the cup in 1978 and 1979, sided with brilliant Barcelona star Messi. His view was shared by Rumenigge, van Basten, Suarez, Kopa, Sammer and Shevchenko.
Surprisingly, former Real Madrid stars di Stefano and Figo plus ex-Chelsea midfielder Gullit all said they couldn’t make a decision while Kaka voted for his Real Madrid coworker Ronaldo as did Beckenbauer and former Milan midfielder Rivera.
Messi, who first won in 2009, is the favourite to win again at the award rite in Zurich on January 7.

Lionel Messi should be crown the best footballer in the world for the fourth successive year, according to some of the game’s greatest players.
In a poll of 13 of the Ballon D’Or’s past winners, Messi beat his greatest rival Cristiano Ronaldo by seven votes to three with three others claim they could not choose between them.
France Football, the publication that originally specially made the trophy back in 1956, spoke to past winners Kaka, Alfredo di Stefano, Ruud Gullit, Luis Figo, Kevin Keegan, Karlheinz Rummenigge, Marco Van Basten, Luis Suarez Miramontes, Raymond Kopa, Matthias Sammer, Franz Beckenbauer, Andrei Shevchenko and Gianni Rivera.

Argentina World Cup star Claudio Caniggia says Neymar “imagination” won’t be enough to surpass Lionel Messi

The former Boca Juniors and River Plate man was sure the 20-year-old would reach great heights in the game, but said he needs time to become one of the best.
One of Neymar’s biggest attributes, according to Caniggia, was his ability to think impulsively on the ball, continually surprising his opponents with unpredictable movements.
"The great player is Meymar. Surely, as I always say, Neymar is a player with more imagination in the world,” he is quote as saying by
"He has a lot of imagination, is creative and finds different ways to score and create a move.
"He will surely be one of the best. He is only 20 years old. We have to give him time. Within a few years, he will be one of the best."
However, the 45-year-old, who as well had a spell with Rangers in Scotland, insisted we were in the age of Barcelona star Messi, saying his fellow Argentinean was convinced to be regard as one of the greatest of all time when his career was over.
Although he would not say who was the best, he likened him to football great such as Pele and Diego Maradona.
“This is the era of Messi. There will always be many story of the career sof players like him. How was Pele, Cruyff, Di Stefano, Maradona ... No matter the order of who is the best,” he added.
Barcelona have been with a move for Neymar in fresh months, so the new star of the Brazil national team may have the chance to prove whether or not he can compete with Messi at the Camp Nou.
