The club competed in at least four competition that year — the Zambian Premier League, the Zambian Cup, the Zambian Challenge Cup and the African Cup of Champions Clubs. He also played for Zambia’s national team that year. paradoxically, that was the same year Muller scored 85 goals for Bayern Munich and Germany. It is unidentified how many games Chitalu played that yeay, as The Zambian FA is currently in the verification process, but he was photographed (via Facebook/Godfrey Chitalu) holding a ball which celebrates his achievement. Godfrey 'UCAR' Chitalu Messi scored twice on Sunday, giving him a total 86 goals for club and country in 2012. The FC Barcelona superstar passed Muller’s 40-year-old blot, and he has three more games to add coldness between himself and the German great. There’s no way the Argentine will score 21 goals to catch Chitalu (will he?), so it is up to the Zambia FA and FIFA to make a decision which player truly holds the record for most goals scored in a calendar year. Messi recovering from injury-scare

MADRID - Barcelona star Lionel Messi at ease fans he was feeling good after taking part in light training on Thursday in the face of being stretchered off with a knee injury during the 0-0 draw at home to Benfica in the Champions League.

The 25-year-old worked in the gym as his teammates trained outside and afterwards said he still had a chance of playing in the La Liga clash against Real Betis on Sunday.

The sight of their star player being stretchered off the pitch silenced the Barca fans, but there was relief soon after with the club confirming the injury was no worse than a bruised left knee.

“Ronaldo has always been there and he deserves it as well. He won the Spanish championship. Iniesta won the European Championship with the national team and therefore, you could reward him.

“I’m not a big fan of these things. If you judge purely on class, you judge Messi. If you want the achievement of the year, you would choose Ronaldo and maybe Iniesta in second. That’s how I see it.”

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta were on Thursday shortlisted for this year's Ballon d'Or, football's world major body FIFA and sponsors France Football magazine said.

Barcelona forward Messi, 25, has by now won the title three times and the Argentine is again favourite to win the award, which will be presented in Zurich on January 7 after votes from the media, nationalized team captains and coaches.

If he wins, he would become the first player to win the award four times, having already joined French legend and current UEFA president Michel Platini as the only players to win three straight titles.

Dutch stars Johan Cruyff and Marco Van Basten have also won three accolade.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter unveiled the shortlist at a news conference in Sao Paulo.

"I won't say it's on a level with the Oscars - but it's not far away," joked Blatter as the three names were exposed from a shortlist of 23.

He also revealed that Spain's Vicente Del Bosque - who ensured the Spanish became the first international side to land three straight tournament by winning Euro 2012 - Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola were on the shortlist for the title of best coach.

In common circumstances, Ronaldo's haul of 46 goals in La Liga last season -- only surpassed by Messi's astonishing 50 -- would likely have placed him in pole position, but Messi's record-breaking feats have left the Portuguese talisman in his shadow.

Ahead of the announcement of the shortlist, Barca teammate Gerard Pique - one of eight Spaniards initially shortlisted - said Ronaldo was a excellent player but Messi "is an alien" and would thus get his vote.

Balotelli can be as good as Messi and Ronaldo, insists Mancini

Emery salutes ´special´ Messi

Spartak Moscow coach Unai Emery has hailed Barcelona star Lionel Messi prior to their Champions League showdown on Tuesday night.

The Ballon d'Or nominee, who recently broke Brazil legend Pele's record for scoring the most goals during one calendar year with his 76th strike against Mallorca, is now only nine behind Gerd Mueller's tally.

"It's the essence of the game. He does everything so naturally, that, when he scores three goals in a match, it seems normal to us."

However, the Spanish coach insisted that, although they are blessed with an outstanding individual player, it is the whole team which makes Barcelona dangerous opponents.

"Barcelona are still centred around Messi, but they give a lot of importance to the group and the contribution of all the players," the former Valencia coach said.

"It's a philosophy that has marked an age, that will stay with us but won't be repeated."

He then shared his view on his team's chances of beating the club that many consider Champions League favourites for this year, and after seeing his side come close to an upset in Camp Nou, he has refused to rely on Siberian conditions to get him an important victory.

"We shouldn't look to the weather to give us more of a chance. We had a good match in the away game," Emery said.

"It was Messi who decided things. We have to repeat what we did there, but playing as well in defence as in attack. If we do that we'll be close to winning."

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — Lionel Messi's stunning solo strike in Argentina's 4-3 win over Brazil in June is among the 10 nominations for the FIFA Goal of the Year.

Goals by Colombia striker Radamel Falcao, Brazil forward Neymar and France playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa are also on the shortlist, which will be reduced to three on November 29 following a public vote on the websites of FIFA and France Football magazine.

The winner of the FIFA Puskas Award, named after Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas, will be revealed on January 7 at the Ballon d'Or gala in Zurich.

Neymar won the 2011 award and will look to retain the prize courtesy of his goal for Santos against Internacional on March 7, when he scored following a mazy dribble from the half-way line.

LONDON — Lionel Messi has returned to the top of the AP Global 10 football rankings by passing Pele’s 54-year-old goal-scoring milestone, while Bayern Munich’s stunning form propelled the German side to the top of the team list.
In The Associated Press’ weekly rankings, Messi finished far ahead of his closest rival, Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who was in goal-scoring form for Manchester United over the past week. Messi is just 10 goals away from breaking the all-time calendar-year record set by Germany’s Gerd Muller in 1982.
"Messi’s got to take top spot after yet another milestone," said panelist James Porteous of The South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. "Passing Pele’s record of 75 goals in a calendar year with his brace against Mallorca. Ten goals in 10 games required to overtake Gerd Muller’s mark of 85 and you’d have to fancy him to achieve it."

Mike McGrath of Britain’s Wardles News Agency and The Sun newspaper, said: "If there was any argument about Lionel Messi being the best player in the world, beating Pele’s record puts that beyond any doubt. He is setting new standards of brilliance every week."
Each panelist in the AP poll gives 10 points for his player of the week, dropping to one point for his 10th choice. The same applies for global club teams. Panelists are football journalists from around the world.
Juventus striker Fabio Quagliarella thrust his way into third place by scoring four goals in the past two games.
Messi received 139 points, Hernandez 98 and Quagliarella 67.
Goalkeeper Fraser Forster, hero of Celtic’s stunning Champions league victory over Barcelona, was recognised by the panelists who voted him into fourth position with 61 points. Strikers Edinson Cavani (5th), Franck Ribery (6th), Cristiano Ronaldo (7th) and Marouanne Fellaini (8th) all benefited from scoring.
"Cavani has replaced Radamel Falcao as the hottest striker in Europe," Will Tidey of Bleacher Report in the U.S. said. "The Uruguayan scored all four in Napoli’s Europa League win on Thursday, then added a goal and an assist in Serie A on Sunday."
Ronaldo proved he’s no softy, scoring for Real Madrid against Levante despite a gruesome eye injury hindering his vision.
Bayern was the team of the week with 128 points, jumping from third place. The 6-1 Champions League thrashing of Lille was clinical, and a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend keeps it at the top of the Bundesliga.
Juventus bounced back from a loss to Inter Milan with 10 goals in two games to come second with 121 points. The Italian team won 4-0 in midweek against Denmark’s Nordsjaelland, and scored six at Pescara. Juve had finished fourth in the previous poll.
United was third, up one position, after successive Champions League victories, thanks mainly to Hernandez.
Celtic’s midweek victory over Barcelona was rewarded with a fourth place, the first time the Scottish team has appeared in the top 10.
Tom Timmerman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said: "Where would Celtic have been in the Champions League without Forster? Not getting as much praise, that’s for sure.
"In a one-game, head-to-head matchup, I’d be inclined to go with Barcelona, but for the bodywork so far this season, it’s hard to look past what Bayern Munich has done, with 10 wins in 11 games and a 7-point edge in the Bundesliga."
